Al Kawthar Foundation

The foundation supports projects that address welfare needs, religious advancement, youth education, and community infrastructure. It also funds capital costs, emergency relief, and occasional core or unrestricted support, along with interest-free loans for community centres. Funding is directed primarily towards UK-based Shia Muslim organisations and grassroots groups serving vulnerable populations. The work they back ranges from essential relief such as food, clothing and medical supplies to religious education and community building.

Eligible applicants are strictly UK-registered charities or community groups, with a preference for small to medium-sized organisations closely aligned with Shia Islam. The foundation focuses on groups serving Shia Muslim communities, especially those that are grassroots and locally rooted. The foundation does not accept unsolicited applications; instead, it identifies potential recipients through its networks. This approach means that organisations already connected to the Shia community are most likely to be considered.

The foundation does not support non-Shia, non-UK, or unrelated causes. It also excludes organisations that do not align with its Shia Islamic focus. General humanitarian charities without a Shia connection, or projects outside the UK, are unlikely to receive funding.

The foundation funds through trustee-led discretionary decisions, made ad hoc as needs arise. It works by invitation, identifying recipients through its networks rather than through open calls. Funding can take the form of one-off project grants, occasional core or unrestricted support, or interest-free loans. The approach is relationship-driven and non-competitive, tailored to the specific needs of the UK Shia community.
