Daphne Jackson Memorial Fellowships Trust

The Trust supports individual researchers returning to work after a significant career break. Fellowships cover the fellow's salary and include at least 100 hours of annual retraining, mentoring and professional development. Projects can be in any research discipline, including STEM, arts, humanities and social sciences, and may take place across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. The Trust offers two types of fellowship: Research Fellowships for those with a PhD or equivalent experience, and Research Technical Professional Fellowships for individuals with professional or technical qualifications who may not hold a doctorate.

Applications are accepted from individual researchers who have taken a career break of two years or longer for family, caring or health reasons. Applicants must be UK residents with the right to work in the UK for at least twelve months. Depending on the fellowship route, candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent, or hold professional or technical qualifications such as C.Tech, C.Eng or B.Tech. Host organisations (universities, institutes or labs) must be able to provide supervision and cover certain research costs.

The Trust does not provide grants to organisations or cover core host costs such as bench fees, consumables, equipment or computing hardware. These costs are instead borne by the host organisation. Funding is directed solely to the individual fellow and does not support whole projects or institutional infrastructure.

Fellowships are typically funded for two to three years, offered on a part-time basis and tailored to each fellow's circumstances. The Trust works in partnership with co-funders, including research councils and charities, to align with strategic priorities. Unsolicited applications from individuals are welcomed. Funding covers the fellow's salary and retraining, while the host organisation provides the research environment and associated costs.
