Dorset Children's Foundation

The Foundation funds medical equipment, mobility aids, and therapies not covered by the NHS for children with long-term illnesses and/or disabilities. This includes specialist wheelchairs, walkers, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, counselling, inclusive activities, and family outings. Their stated priority is the relief of sickness and preservation of health among children with long-term conditions, by providing or assisting in the provision of medical equipment, treatment, and rehabilitation not normally provided by statutory authorities. Support is available for children who live in the Dorset area or have strong links to it, such as attending a Dorset school.

Registered charities, community groups, and individual families can apply, with parents or carers able to self-refer at any time. The Foundation supports children with physical disabilities, complex health needs, learning disabilities, autism, and other conditions. Children must live in the Dorset area or have strong links to it, for example by attending a Dorset school. The Foundation prioritises a family-led approach and involves trustee-parents in service delivery, reflecting a grassroots ethos.

The Foundation does not fund large capital projects such as house renovations or garden alterations. It does not provide money directly to families; instead, it pays invoices on the family's behalf. Support may also be declined if the family is deemed able to self-fund.

The Foundation provides support by purchasing and paying for equipment, therapies, and services directly, rather than giving cash grants to families. They welcome unsolicited applications from families and professionals, and work closely with families to identify needs. Their approach is family-led and pragmatic, with trustee-parents actively involved in delivery.
