Gatwick Airport Community Trust

Gatwick Airport Community Trust is an independent grant-making charity established in 2002 through a legally binding agreement between Gatwick Airport Limited, West Sussex County Council, and Crawley Borough Council. Its core mission is to enhance social and environmental well-being for communities most affected by airport operations, within a designated area spanning parts of East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, and Kent. Governed by nine volunteer trustees with no paid staff, the Trust embodies values of community benefit, inclusivity, local empowerment, sustainability, impartiality, and transparency, channeling airport-linked funds—including annual donations and noise fines—directly into local impact without fundraising.

The Trust prioritizes projects supporting young people's development and well-being (e.g., education, recreation), people with disabilities and the elderly, community facility improvements (village halls, playgrounds), environmental conservation and education, amateur arts (music, drama, visual), sporting facilities, volunteering, and initiatives tackling social isolation or boosting engagement. It funds registered charities and voluntary groups delivering these via project costs, small capital items, equipment, or linked running costs, as seen in 2024's 106 grants totaling £218,757 to youth clubs, arts groups, environmental bodies, and community centers.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities and community groups based in or directly benefiting the Trust's mapped area, with preference for small to medium grassroots organizations; no strict income limits apply, but national charities are rare. Grants typically range £1,000–£5,000 (minimum £250). Unsolicited applications use an online form during the annual round—one per organization—requiring project details, budgets, accounts, and local benefit evidence; the 2025 round closed 31 March (next expected November 2025), with decisions 10-12 weeks later.

It excludes unrestricted core funding, large-scale capital projects, and anything outside its geographic footprint or priorities. Distinctively tied to aviation impact mitigation, it emphasizes sustainable, capacity-building projects with lasting local value for those living, working, or visiting airport-affected areas.
