Help for Health

Help for Health is an independent charitable trust established in 2002 through the merger of The Health Scheme and Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund, dedicated to relieving sickness and supporting the mentally or physically disabled within East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North and North East Lincolnshire. Guided by founding values of practical support, community focus, and continuity, it addresses health inequalities via strategic local grant-making, emphasizing tangible improvements in health access and wellbeing for disadvantaged groups, from clinical rehabilitation and health education to specialist mental health and disability interventions.

It funds projects enhancing physical/mental health, disability support, and inclusion for demographics affected by geography, socioeconomic factors, or conditions—such as MSc studentships at University of Hull, services for learning-disabled people via Linkage Community Trust, and Down syndrome initiatives through Downright Special. Support spans core funding, project delivery, equipment, capital, and capacity-building (including the 2017 Lazenby Fund for rural East Riding needs), targeting both large regional charities and grassroots groups with proven local impact.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities or academic institutions demonstrating benefits exclusively for residents in the specified Humber region; it supports diverse sizes (under £100k to over £1m income) with robust governance, but is invite-only—organisations must initiate via phone enquiry, as unsolicited applications are not accepted.

Grants typically range £5,000–£40,000 (average £15,000; up to £50,000+ for multi-year projects), awarded on a rolling basis at quarterly trustee meetings (March, June, September, December), with 8–12 week decisions after initial contact and written proposals (email/post). It excludes non-regional work, statutory replacements, and routine unrestricted aid, distinguishing itself through deep regional embedding, adaptive responsiveness, and pragmatic philanthropy for measurable health gains.
