Howard Foundation

The Foundation prioritises thematic areas including obesity, eye health (especially macular carotenoids), prostate cancer, creatine, and Alzheimer’s disease. It supports specialist academic chairs, research groups, scientific conferences, and institutional capacity-building at universities, rather than service-delivery programmes. The Foundation focuses on large, established UK universities, particularly Cambridge, though aligned international partners are considered. Funding is directed toward research and infrastructure that advances public health through rigorous science, with a particular emphasis on nutrition, nutraceuticals, and related biomedical fields.

Eligible entities are exclusively academic institutions and research bodies, with a preference for large, established UK universities, especially Cambridge. The Foundation does not set income thresholds but small or grassroots organisations are not supported. There is no religious restriction. Beneficiaries are ultimately the public through improved health outcomes, but the direct recipients are research groups and academic departments advancing biomedical science.

The Foundation does not fund general charity operations, community projects, service-delivery programmes, or non-research activities. It does not support small or grassroots organisations, and unsolicited applications are not accepted. The Foundation's remit is strictly biomedical research and academic infrastructure, excluding broader philanthropic or community-based initiatives.

Funding is invite-only, based on strategic trustee decisions and partnership opportunities rather than open applications. The Foundation provides multi-year research grants, endowed chairs, and capital projects, blending one-off infrastructure investments with sustained research support. It works through direct collaboration with partner universities, emphasising long-term academic relationships over transactional grant-making.
