Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust

The Trust funds animal welfare activities such as rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming or release of animals; direct protection of endangered species; and feeding, capture, neutering and release of feral cats and dogs. It also covers vets’ fees and neutering costs for people in financial hardship. Grants support core costs, capital works, equipment and project delivery. The Trust supports charities operating in the UK and overseas, as long as the applicant is a UK-registered charity. It prioritises smaller charities that focus on rehoming or release.

Only registered charities are eligible. Applicants must have been registered with a UK Charity Commission or Register for at least 12 months. The Trust favours smaller charities. It supports charities working directly with animals, including those that operate overseas, provided they are UK-registered. There is no religious restriction. The Trust does not fund individuals.

The Trust does not fund individuals, charities not registered in the UK, or applications made within 12 months of a previous application. It excludes sanctuaries that do not actively rehome or release animals, charities that export animals to the UK from overseas unless specific criteria are met, and charities without a humane destruction policy for animals that cannot have a reasonable quality of life. Charities with cash or investments exceeding one year’s expenditure are not eligible unless reserves are held for a specific purpose. Charities that spend an unreasonable proportion of income on administration are also excluded.

The Trust provides grants for core costs, capital works, equipment and project delivery. It welcomes unsolicited applications and favours smaller charities. Grants support both UK-based and overseas work, provided the applicant is a UK-registered charity.
