John James Bristol Foundation

The Foundation supports a wide range of work including projects for children and young people, community initiatives, educational programmes, health services, social welfare, and services for older people. It favours small to medium-sized organisations and often funds core costs, small capital projects, capacity building, and community events. Priority is given to Bristol-based organisations, and the Foundation focuses on hyper-local work that directly benefits disadvantaged residents in the city's most deprived areas, such as social events for seniors, school grants, refugee integration, mental health programmes, and health equipment for local hospices and NHS trusts.

Registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, community interest companies, community benefit societies, and community groups based in the City of Bristol are eligible to apply. The Foundation gives priority to small and medium-sized organisations that have been operating for at least one year and have filed accounts. It does not impose any religious restriction and welcomes applications from organisations working with disadvantaged residents, including children and young people, older people, and those experiencing social exclusion.

The Foundation does not fund work it considers the responsibility of the state, projects that will already have taken place before a grant is agreed, purchases of land or buildings, professional fees and feasibility studies for larger capital projects, heritage or conservation projects with limited community benefit, sports projects with limited community benefit, website development, publications, individual sponsorship, contributions to other grant-making bodies, pilot projects, or religious organisations with no or limited secular activity. Animal welfare is also excluded.

The Foundation offers both one-off and multi-year grants and may provide matched funding. They welcome unsolicited applications and consider them on a rolling basis. Grants typically support core costs, small capital projects, capacity building, and community events, with a focus on practical, community-led solutions that directly benefit disadvantaged residents in Bristol.
