Portsmouth Hospitals Charity

Portsmouth Hospitals Charity is the official charity partner of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, serving Portsmouth and South East Hampshire by enhancing patient care, supporting staff welfare, and advancing medical research beyond core NHS funding. Established to make tangible improvements in local healthcare, it stewards donations, legacies, and fundraising to fund equipment, projects, and initiatives that elevate patient experiences, family support, and workforce wellbeing for over 675,000 residents, with specialised services reaching two million more. Its patient-centred mission emphasises partnership with the NHS, strategic investments in clinical environments, staff development, and innovation, guided by values of impact, locality, and stewardship.

The charity prioritises three pillars: patient care enhancements like advanced equipment, comfort items, and facility refurbishments (e.g., Mortuary Viewing Rooms, Cancer Support Centres); staff wellbeing through training, welfare programmes, and facilities upgrades; and research initiatives fostering local innovation. It supports all wards, departments, community hospitals, and specialist centres within the Trust, funding capital projects, everyday essentials, and non-mandatory training with clear, measurable benefits for patients, families, or staff.

Eligibility is strictly limited to Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust teams—wards, departments, and NHS staff—who email proposals to pho-tr.charitablefunds@nhs.net for guidance and forms; no unsolicited applications from external charities, organisations, or community groups are accepted. Grants typically range from £1,000 to £50,000 (up to more for major projects), awarded on a rolling basis year-round with no deadlines. It excludes core NHS costs, unrestricted external support, or unrelated activities, distinguishing itself through deep Trust integration, hyper-local focus, and exclusive internal grant-making for above-statutory healthcare enhancements.
