Royal Medical Benevolent Fund

The Fund supports essential living costs including housing, transport, and childcare; emergency payments; monthly maintenance grants; specialist equipment; back-to-work awards; and student bursaries to prevent course dropouts. It also provides holistic support through debt advice, confidential mental health services, and signposting to specialists. Beneficiaries are based across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Fund prioritises those facing hardship due to professional stresses such as addiction or mental health challenges, and supports individuals at all career stages from medical students to retired doctors and their dependants.

The Royal Medical Benevolent Fund supports individuals only: practising and retired doctors, recent graduates, UK medical students, and direct dependants including refugees retraining. There is no requirement for BMA membership. The Fund welcomes unsolicited applications from eligible individuals across the UK. Support is tailored to individual needs, with a focus on those who have limited alternatives and are facing hardship due to illness, disability, age, bereavement, or other crises. The Fund's compassionate approach means applicants are treated with dignity and without judgment.

The Fund does not support organisations, projects, or commercial uses. It only assists individuals in hardship; non-hardship cases are not eligible. It does not fund through other charities or intermediaries.

The Fund welcomes unsolicited applications and operates a rapid-response model to provide timely support. It offers both one-off emergency payments and ongoing monthly maintenance grants, as well as back-to-work awards and student bursaries. Support is tailored to individual circumstances, combining financial relief with holistic services such as debt advice and mental health support. The Fund works in partnership with the NHS and medical colleges.
