Sailors' Children's Society

The Society funds children and families connected to the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, fishing, ferries, cruise ships, and inland waterways. Support includes specialist Family Support Officers who offer emotional guidance and practical help, alongside means-tested welfare grants, clothing and uniform allowances, one-off aid for school trips, equipment, fuel, or emergencies, Christmas gifts and meals, and respite holidays. This assistance is ongoing until families reach self-sufficiency or children complete their education. The charity operates across the UK, focusing on maritime families facing severe crisis. The blend of financial and emotional aid is designed to address the specific hardships of seafaring life, such as bereavement, life-limiting illness, or family breakdown.

The Society accepts applications directly from families or guardians of children under 18 in full-time education who have a seafaring background—typically with at least six months' sea service. Support is means-tested and prioritises those facing severe economic or emotional crisis. The charity funds individuals only, not charities or organisations. There is no religious restriction. Families must be based in the UK. The application process is designed to be accessible, with proof of seafaring connection and financial circumstances required. The Society's support is tailored to each family's needs, with annual reviews to ensure ongoing suitability.

The Society does not fund general child poverty cases or families without a seafaring connection. It does not support charities, organisations, or groups—only individual families. Funding is restricted to UK maritime families in severe crisis; non-maritime cases are excluded. The charity also does not provide support for children over 18 or those not in full-time education.
