UGV funds work addressing poverty, homelessness, mental and physical health, and community development. The foundation supports project delivery, capital works, equipment, and staff salaries. UGV does not support causes related to animals, sport or recreation, faith-based activities, or early years work. Excluded costs include core running costs, training, research, events, transport, feasibility studies, and emergency relief. The foundation also excludes charities that collect funds for distribution to other organisations, as well as sponsorship, marketing, or general appeals. Counselling is only considered if it directly addresses the current priority areas.

UGV provides project-based grants, including capital works, equipment, and salaries. Match funding is encouraged, as the foundation likes its grants to stimulate funding from other organisations. The charity welcomes unsolicited applications and works with organisations across Northern Ireland on a one-off or occasional basis, focusing on clear, measurable outcomes rather than ongoing core support.
