Applicants can be registered charities or unregistered community groups, including unincorporated associations and charitable incorporated organisations. They do not need to be registered charities to apply, but grants to unregistered charities will be restricted to specific charitable activities. The Trust can only make grants to support activity which is charitable in law. Beneficiaries include the general public, disabled people, older people, children, young people, veterans, and carers. Applications from outside the primary area of benefit are unlikely to be supported.

The Trust does not fund general appeals, non-public-interest religious activities, statutory public body functions, or other grantmakers. It also does not support applications from outside its primary area of benefit, as these are unlikely to be considered. Grants are only made for activity that is charitable in law, so commercial ventures or activities without public benefit are excluded.
