About Bagri Foundation

The Bagri Foundation is a UK charitable trust established in 1990 by Lord Bagri CBE and led since 2015 by Dr Alka Bagri. It champions curiosity, learning, excellence, integrity and collaboration to advance understanding of Asia's arts, culture and ideas. Evolving from earlier education and relief work, the foundation now focuses on high-quality programmes that weave together traditional and contemporary Asian perspectives. Its funding character is highly engaged and co-creative, working in close partnership with grantees to support ambitious, thought-provoking public-facing projects. The foundation prioritises artistic merit and projects that challenge stereotypes and amplify Asian voices.

What Bagri Foundation funds

The foundation funds public-facing cultural activities centred on Asia and its diaspora. This includes artistic commissions, festivals, exhibitions, performances, film, music, literature, lectures, courses, cross-cultural research with tangible outcomes, prizes and scholarships. Support is available for both emerging and established practitioners, institutions and collectives. The foundation gives repeat backing for visual arts, performance, experimental music, art history research and musician scholarships. Geographically, projects in London and across the UK are prioritised, with European projects also welcome. International projects are considered by invitation only.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants include UK-registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, community interest companies, and experienced creative collectives with a strong track record. No income thresholds apply, though medium-to-large organisations are more common among grantees. The foundation prioritises projects based in London and the UK, and also welcomes applications from European organisations. Support targets projects that centre on Asia and its diaspora, for both emerging and established practitioners.

What Bagri Foundation doesn't fund

The Bagri Foundation does not fund core or unrestricted costs, research-only projects, individuals, or any work that is not focused on Asia. Projects lacking a public-facing element are also excluded.

How they like to fund

The foundation operates a high-engagement, co-creative partnership model, emphasising artistic merit, ambition and stereotype-challenging impact. It welcomes unsolicited applications. Funding is provided for specific projects rather than core costs, and the foundation offers repeat backing for selected disciplines such as visual arts and performance.
