Bank of Scotland Foundation

The Foundation funds charities supporting vulnerable people in Scotland, prioritising work that tackles disadvantage and social exclusion. Its funding spans poverty and financial hardship, mental health and wellbeing, social isolation, access to education and employment, disability inclusion, and community-led efforts that prevent harm and promote holistic approaches. Some programmes focus specifically on volunteer-led projects, recognising the value of peer support and community action. Grants can be used for core costs, project delivery, salaries, equipment, training, and capital works, giving charities the flexibility to invest in what matters most. The Foundation operates across the whole of Scotland, supporting registered charities based in Scotland and delivering services for Scottish communities, from cities to rural areas.

The Foundation welcomes applications from registered charities based in Scotland that work with vulnerable people across the country. It particularly supports organisations serving children and young people, older people, disabled people, carers, refugees, homeless people, unemployed adults, women, men, ethnic minority communities, and rural communities. Charities with strong local roots and a grassroots approach are a good fit, as the Foundation looks to back small organisations making a difference in their communities. National organisations are unlikely to be prioritised. Individuals and non-registered groups are not eligible.

The Foundation does not fund events, transport costs, feasibility studies, or emergency relief. Grants are made to registered charities only, so individuals cannot apply. Organisations without a Scottish base, or those working outside Scotland, are not supported. While there is no strict ban on larger bodies, the Foundation’s focus on small, grassroots groups means national organisations are rarely funded.

The Foundation provides multi-year unrestricted grants, giving charities the freedom to allocate funding where it is needed most. Match funding is not required. Alongside financial support, the Foundation can bring in corporate volunteers from Lloyds Banking Group to contribute their time and expertise, adding practical help to the grant. This partnership-based approach aims to strengthen charities’ capacity and sustainability.
