The Foundation funds work across five broad themes: physical health, children and youth welfare, older people's services, community development, and disability. Grants are unrestricted and intended for core costs, giving charities the freedom to use the money where it is most needed. This flexibility supports day-to-day operations and the underlying strength of an organisation, rather than individual project budgets. Geographically, the Foundation operates across the whole of the United Kingdom, but it has a traditional emphasis on the West Midlands, where it gives particular assistance to local charities. Within its themes, it favours smaller, grassroots organisations that are close to the communities they serve.

The Foundation welcomes applications from registered charities, community groups, and other not-for-profit organisations based in the United Kingdom. It has a clear preference for smaller organisations, where an unrestricted grant for core costs can make a meaningful difference to everyday operations. The work funded should serve one or more of the priority groups described previously. There is no restriction on religious context, and the Foundation is open to secular and faith-based groups alike. Individual people and for-profit companies are not eligible to apply.

The Foundation does not make grants to individuals, nor does it fund for-profit companies or commercial ventures. It supports not-for-profit activity only. Work must take place in the United Kingdom and be carried out by a UK-based organisation; projects or appeals based overseas fall outside the Foundation's remit.
