Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation

The Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation, established in 2003 by Ernest Hecht OBE—a resilient Czech refugee, publisher, and philanthropist—embodied his vision of enabling potential through compassion, inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability. Its mission centered on supporting UK-registered charities to improve quality of life for disadvantaged, vulnerable, young, elderly, and disabled people, while fostering social mobility via education and arts access. With an eclectic, questioning ethos, it built strategic multi-year relationships, prioritizing enduring impact, innovative underfunded initiatives, and capacity-building over short-term aid, including crisis support during Covid-19.

The foundation funded diverse causes across England and Wales: education (scholarships for underrepresented groups at Lucy Cavendish College and UCL), arts/culture (Holocaust Centre North, Corby Community Arts, Little Angel Theatre), health/disability (Access Sport, Mildmay Hospital, Chilterns Neuro Centre), poverty relief, and community advancement. It offered project and core funding to grassroots and established organizations, emphasizing empowerment for marginalized groups, creative expression in deprived areas, Holocaust education, and social inclusion—without religious restrictions or thematic silos.

Eligible applicants were strictly UK-registered charities operating in the UK, with no specified income limits, but unsolicited applications were never accepted. Typical grants ranged from £2,000 to £50,000 (mostly £5,000–£20,000). However, as of 2025, the foundation has permanently closed its grant process—no new applications, nominations, enquiries, or grants will be considered.
