Faraday Institution

The Faraday Institution funds targeted applied research on battery priorities, including lithium-ion degradation, modelling, safety, manufacturing, electrode materials and next-generation chemistries such as solid-state, sodium-ion and lithium-sulfur. Work is supported through programmes that strengthen ties between industry and academic institutions, create or investigate spin-out businesses, and rapidly advance research towards validation and practical use. The Institution also supports work on developing greater consistency of battery data and metadata for AI approaches to battery science. All funded work takes place across the United Kingdom.

Applications are accepted from UK-based academic institutions, researchers and industrial partners. The Institution's programmes are open to registered charities, social enterprises and individuals, depending on the specific programme. For example, entrepreneurial fellowships are open to UK researchers wishing to create businesses from Faraday Institution research, while industry fellowships require joint applications from academic and industrial partners. Beneficiaries are UK-based organisations and individuals working on battery research and innovation.

The Faraday Institution does not fund core costs, unrestricted funding, direct work with people or communities, or non-UK projects. Applications from individuals outside their specific fellowship programmes are not supported. Within certain programmes, equipment, training, events and transport costs are also excluded.

The Institution funds specific projects rather than multi-year grants. Funding supports research, salaries and project delivery. They welcome unsolicited applications through their open programmes, while some programmes are run on a closed call basis. The focus is on collaborative, industry-relevant research that accelerates battery innovation in the UK.
