Natural England

The funder supports thematic priorities that centre on nature recovery and climate resilience. These include restoring ecological networks such as the Nature Recovery Network, protecting and improving designated sites, expanding access to nature for diverse communities, nature-based climate solutions, urban greening, species recovery and fostering partnerships. Supported activities cover habitat creation and restoration across rivers, wetlands, forests and peatlands, capital works, conservation management, green therapy, community engagement and toolkits for local authorities. All work must deliver landscape-scale impacts in England.

Eligible applicants are organisations based in England, including registered charities, community groups, academic institutions, local authorities, farmers and land managers. A formal constitution and capacity to deliver landscape-scale projects are expected. The funder does not apply a fixed income threshold; suitability is assessed on project merit and organisational fit. Priority beneficiaries include communities with limited access to nature and those involved in nature recovery. There is no religious restriction on applicants.

Natural England does not fund unrestricted or core costs. Funding is directed towards capital-focused projects with only limited provision for revenue or capacity building support. General operating expenses and overheads are excluded.

Natural England operates through targeted funding programmes and welcomes unsolicited applications. Grants are project-based, capital-focused, and are often complemented by blended finance and cross-sector partnerships to achieve landscape-scale change. The funder also acts as a regulator, designating protected sites and fostering systemic, place-based approaches.
