Hackney Parochial Charities

The charity supports work in poverty and hardship relief, education and skills, children and youth, older people, community development, and refugees and migrants. For organisations, funding can cover project delivery, equipment, training, events, and capital works. Individual grants support equipment and training. All funded activities must directly benefit residents living within the ancient parish boundaries of Hackney, or South Hackney depending on the programme. The trust does not fund heritage, environment, animals, arts, sport, faith, criminal justice, domestic abuse, armed forces, carers, homelessness, mental or physical health, disability, or employment projects.

Organisations including registered charities, schools, faith groups, community groups, social enterprises, CIOs, CICs, unincorporated associations, and trusts based in the ancient parish of Hackney or surrounding parishes can apply. Applicant organisations must provide direct services. Individuals living within the ancient parish boundaries may apply for grants in cases of hardship, with individual applications considered separately. The trust prioritises support for older people, refugees, children, young people, and the general public facing poverty.

The trust excludes a wide range of activities and costs. It does not fund feasibility studies, research, core costs, salaries, transport, emergency relief, retrospective grants, debt, daily living costs, rent, utility bills, or IT equipment (except for individual hardship). Also excluded are general appeals, statutory responsibilities, schools or universities (except hardship individuals), overseas trips, family holidays (except group trips), heritage or environmental conservation projects, campaigning, and website development. Individual applicants cannot receive more than two grants within five years.

Hackney Parochial Charities offers project grants to organisations and individual grants for equipment and training. Organisational applications can be submitted at any time, with trustees meeting twice a year to consider project applications. Individual applications are considered quarterly. The trust welcomes unsolicited applications and focuses on hyper-local, place-based giving. All grants must be used for work that directly benefits residents of the ancient parish boundaries. No funding is provided for ongoing core costs or salaries.
