Herefordshire Community Foundation

Herefordshire Community Foundation (HCF), established in June 2002, is an independent grant-making charity dedicated to promoting charitable purposes across Herefordshire, with a core mission to advance education, protect mental and physical health, and relieve poverty and sickness. Its vision centers on building stronger, more resilient communities by connecting local donors—through named endowment funds from residents, families, and businesses—with causes addressing disadvantage, isolation, vulnerability, and hardship. Guided by values of ethics, honesty, integrity, and inclusivity, HCF leverages deep local knowledge via Vital Signs Reports, emergency appeals, and partnerships with councils and national bodies to drive evidence-led, preventative impact.

HCF funds a broad spectrum of community needs, prioritizing children and young people, older adults, disabled individuals, education and training, health and wellbeing, community cohesion, arts with public benefit, rural/environmental issues, hardship relief, refugees, and inclusive sports. Supported activities include creative workshops for vulnerable teens, mental health recovery, food banks, veteran aid, scholarships, outdoor learning, and microgrants for grassroots initiatives, often covering projects, core costs, revenue, seed funding, or emergencies benefiting disadvantaged residents.

Eligible applicants include UK-registered charities, community groups, and social enterprises based in or serving Herefordshire (some funds extend to neighboring counties), with a preference for small, grassroots organizations of modest turnover and no strict income limits. Typical grants range from £3,000–£5,000 (microgrants up to £2,000; rarely over £10,000). Applications are unsolicited via online form (or hard copy), encouraged after pre-discussion with grants staff; most are rolling with 4–6 week decisions, though some like Community Chest close December 12, 2025. Exclusions cover non-charitable activities, medical research, religious promotion, retrospective funding, statutory replacements, political work, or projects without community benefit.
