Jean Shanks Foundation

The foundation funds pathology-focused initiatives including pre-doctoral research bursaries, clinical lecturer support grants, intermediate research fellowships, and clinical PhD fellowships. These support salaries, research costs, and equipment. The work takes place across the UK and Ireland, in academic and NHS pathology departments. The foundation supports research and education that advances understanding and treatment of disease, with a clear emphasis on pathology and related sciences.

Eligible applicants are individuals accredited for a CCT in Histopathology in the UK or the equivalent in Ireland, working in academic or NHS pathology departments. The foundation supports early-career researchers and clinicians, including those pursuing pre-doctoral or clinical PhD studies. Applications are made through the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, with the foundation funding programmes that are open to applicants across the UK and Ireland.

The foundation does not fund general core costs, capital projects, or non-medical work. Grants are strictly for pathology and medical research and education, and are not available for activities outside this scope.

The foundation provides multi-year grants, typically over a two-year period, covering salaries, research costs, and equipment. It works in partnership with the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and applications are made through that society.
