It funds targeted projects with high-impact potential, such as research centres and early-stage treatments, and has enabled breakthroughs in medical research on cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, as well as technologies for deaf, blind, and partially-sighted children. Geographically, the Trust focuses on UK academic institutions and health organisations, with a particular preference for those linked to the University of Sussex, though its area of benefit is national across England and Wales.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered academic institutions and medium-to-large research organisations capable of undertaking major projects. The Foundation welcomes unsolicited applications from UK entities, with no religious restrictions or strict income thresholds, though preference is given to established groups. The Trust prioritises organisations working in health, education, and disability, particularly those benefiting disadvantaged groups, and favours applicants with strong local roots in Sussex or connections to the University of Sussex.

The Foundation does not support core costs, unrestricted funding, or emergency relief. It avoids generalist community support and instead focuses on major projects that advance UK science and health research, so smaller or less established organisations may find their needs outside the Trust's remit.

The Foundation provides project and capital funding for major initiatives, typically in the range of tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds. It favours long-term investment in scientific excellence and capacity-building, and welcomes unsolicited applications from UK entities, with no fixed submission windows.
