JGW Patterson Foundation

Activities must be based in or serve Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Durham, and Cumbria, with a particular focus on Tyne and Wear. The Foundation's work concentrates on innovative medical advances and patient care enhancements that address unmet needs in the region's health landscape.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities and academic institutions based in or serving the specified North East areas. The Foundation primarily supports local NHS Trusts, universities, research units, and specialist organisations involved in scientific studies, clinical improvements, or direct patient support. While no strict income thresholds apply, the Foundation shows a preference for small- to medium-sized entities with a clear alignment to its themes of cancer, arthritis, and rheumatology. Unsolicited applications are welcome, and the Foundation values organisations that demonstrate strong local roots and regional focus.

The Foundation does not support core or unrestricted costs, and multi-year funding is rare. External PhD applications are not considered, nor are projects outside the defined geography of Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Durham, and Cumbria. Any activities beyond its focus on cancer, arthritis, and rheumatological conditions are excluded from consideration.

The Foundation primarily awards single-year, project-specific grants. It values academic rigour, and research proposals undergo peer review.
