John Charnley Trust

The John Charnley Trust supports orthopaedic surgeons in training through short-term fellowships focused on reconstructive hip and knee surgery. The programme funds stand-alone educational visits of three to six weeks to centres of interest worldwide. These fellowships enable surgeons to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in joint replacement techniques, including low friction arthroplasty. The Trust supports training and research activities that advance surgical practice and improve patient outcomes. Fellowships cover the direct costs of the educational visit, fostering international collaboration and skill development.

The Trust welcomes applications from orthopaedic surgeons in training who are attached to recognised clinical or academic settings. Fellowships are open to individuals committed to advancing their skills in reconstructive hip and knee surgery. There are no restrictions on the location of the applicant's home institution, and placements can be at centres worldwide. The Trust prioritises surgeons who demonstrate a clear plan for how the fellowship will enhance their surgical practice and benefit patient care.

The Trust does not fund fellowships that attract a salary, nor does it provide top-up fees for travel, visas, or other incidental costs. The programme is designed for stand-alone educational visits, so costs beyond the direct fellowship are not covered.
