Lake District Foundation

The Lake District Foundation, successor to Nurture Lakeland, drives a mission to safeguard the Lake District's natural environment, rich heritage, and resilient communities through collaborative stewardship for future generations. Rooted in values of transparency, sustainability, innovation, equity, diversity, and partnership, it inspires positive action on urgent environmental and cultural challenges as the principal fundraising ally of the Lake District National Park Partnership. Funding decisions prioritize place-based interventions blending conservation, community empowerment, and measurable ecological gains, believing galvanised local, national, and international support yields scalable, enduring stewardship exemplars.

It funds nature conservation initiatives including tree planting, hedgerow creation, wildlife habitat restoration, pollinator garden establishment, and biodiversity enhancement projects led by conservation volunteers and specialist charities; climate action through low-carbon infrastructure, renewable energy implementation like solar panels and electric vehicle charging, and business carbon footprint reduction for small enterprises transitioning to sustainability; water quality improvements via lake purification, river restoration, and partnerships like Love Windermere addressing pollution and ecosystem health; cultural heritage preservation restoring resilient landscapes and upland footpaths through Fix the Fells; and inclusion efforts enhancing accessibility for visitor groups, fostering welcoming spaces and sustainable tourism that builds local economic resilience. Supported activities encompass community-led habitat projects, innovative green infrastructure, heritage repairs, and biodiversity boosts delivering clean water, vibrant ecosystems, and inclusive outdoor access for rural communities and environmental stewards.

Exclusions encompass core funding, unrestricted support, or activities beyond Lake District and Cumbria's natural, cultural, and community realms, favouring no duplicative or non-collaborative efforts. Distinctive for its hyper-local focus on National Park synergies, it prioritises grassroots charities, landowners, and businesses demonstrating evidence-led collaboration, innovation, and large-scale environmental impact over generalist interventions, uniquely blending direct grants with partnership fundraising to empower rural conservation volunteers, inclusive visitor experiences, and heritage custodians in biodiversity hotspots and climate-vulnerable watersheds.
