Northumbria Historic Churches Trust

The Trust funds capital works and equipment for Christian churches in the North East of England. This includes essential structural repairs such as stonework conservation, roofing renewal, and energy-efficient heating and lighting systems. They also support electrical wiring upgrades, floor and window repairs, and facility enhancements like kitchens and toilets that enable broader community use. The geographic scope covers the region from the River Tweed to the River Tees, encompassing the Anglican dioceses of Durham and Newcastle, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and County Durham.

Christian churches of any denomination that are open regularly for worship and located in the North East of England may apply. The Trust welcomes applications from faith groups across the region, from the Tweed to the Tees. They prioritise churches that are active community assets and need help with restoration and repair costs.

The Trust does not fund routine upkeep of churches, including boiler servicing, routine redecoration, or gutter cleaning. Repairs to church halls, churchyards, or car parks are excluded, as is work that would be covered by an insurance claim. Also not funded are work relating to organs, clocks, and bells, and professional and consultancy fees, inspections, exploratory work, or construction reports.

The Trust offers grants for capital works and equipment, with no requirement for match funding. They accept unsolicited applications year-round. Support is provided as one-off grants for specific restoration and repair projects, enabling churches to address urgent structural needs and enhance their facilities for community use.
