Persula Foundation

The Persula Foundation, established in 1994 by Julian Richer of Richer Sounds and reconstituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2021, is an independent grant-making body dedicated to tackling social inequities and fostering a fairer society. Governed by six trustees steeped in charity best practice, it upholds core values of social justice, inclusion, fairness, and human dignity, providing strategic funding to organisations addressing acute social needs with a commitment to public benefit and systemic change.

It prioritises homelessness, disability, human rights, building a fairer society, and animal welfare, supporting direct services, advocacy, research, capacity building, and innovative projects for beneficiaries like homeless individuals, disabled people, marginalised communities, rights advocates, and animals in distress. Grantees span national charities (e.g., Fairness Foundation, TaxWatch) to emerging groups, funding economic fairness campaigns, prison reform, LGBT rights, humane slaughter research, and tech innovations for underrepresented causes, with flexibility for restricted/unrestricted grants emphasising impact and originality.

UK-registered charities operating in England and Wales are eligible, with no income thresholds, religious restrictions, or geographic sub-limits within the UK; it welcomes unsolicited applications from small to large organisations aligning with its themes. Grants typically range £10,000–£100,000 annually (up to £250,000+ for multi-year), via rolling email enquiries to the Secretary including proposals, budgets, and outcomes—decisions within 8–16 weeks post regular trustee meetings. Distinctive for its risk-tolerant support of unproven ideas, substantial £1.5m+ yearly distributions, and responsive style without fixed rounds, it avoids primary focus on capital or emergencies, favouring rights-based, welfare-driven innovation.
