Pettman (Classical Music) Foundation

The Foundation funds specific classical music projects, scholarships, and programmes that support education, performance, residencies, masterclasses, competition travel, and elite ensemble training. Its work is concentrated on enabling young, economically disadvantaged New Zealand musicians to access world-class international experiences that address geographic or financial hurdles. The Foundation supports cultural exchange and specialist training to develop high-potential talent, with a geographic priority on New Zealand connections and international reach rather than UK-wide activities. All funding is project-specific and directed toward classical music education and performance.

Eligible entities include individual young musicians and small specialist organisations that are part of the New Zealand classical music scene. There are no strict income limits or specific organisation types required, but the Foundation looks for strong potential and a clear connection to New Zealand. Beneficiaries are typically from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the Foundation prioritises those facing economic barriers. Larger UK-focused or generalist charities do not align with the Foundation’s hyper-specialist purpose.

The Foundation does not fund non-classical activities, core costs, or unrestricted support. It also does not support initiatives without a clear New Zealand link. Generalist or UK-wide charities fall outside its remit, as does any work outside the field of classical music education and performance.

Grants are awarded by invitation only; the Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications. It operates in a relational manner, identifying pre-identified opportunities and nurturing high-potential talent through targeted, project-specific support. The Foundation’s approach is scholarship-oriented and based on its own research and network, rather than open calls or public processes.
