Toynbee Hall

Toynbee Hall focuses on poverty relief, financial inclusion and free advice on debt, welfare, housing and legal issues, alongside mental health support, social inclusion for vulnerable groups, lifelong education and civic engagement. Its work spans direct services, participatory research, policy advocacy and community arts, with a base at Toynbee Studios. The organisation supports grassroots initiatives through micro grants, youth leadership and participatory action research, aiming to build the confidence and agency of local residents. Geographically, its core focus is Tower Hamlets and wider East London, while pan-London initiatives such as Debt Free London extend support across the capital.

Toynbee Hall engages directly with local individuals, young people and grassroots community groups in East London, primarily Tower Hamlets. The Trust prioritises low-income families, older and young people, people with disabilities and systemically disadvantaged residents, with a particular focus on those facing multiple forms of exclusion. It does not fund external charities or organisations, and there are no income thresholds for the individuals and community groups it supports. Rather than being a conventional grantmaker, Toynbee Hall works in partnership with local residents and grassroots initiatives.

The Trust’s funding style reflects its broader role as a service provider, researcher and catalyst for change, prioritising power-shifting collaboration with the communities it serves.
