UK Community Foundations

UK Community Foundations (UKCF) is the national network of 46 accredited community foundations across the UK, established in 1975 as the fourth largest funder in the country, distributing over £184 million annually and £2.1 billion since inception. With a physical presence in every region, UKCF champions local philanthropy, sustainable community development, and grassroots funding, rooted in values of social and environmental justice, diversity, inclusion, fairness, and community empowerment. Its place-based approach harnesses local expertise to address pressing needs, fostering resilient neighbourhoods through strategic partnerships, endowments for long-term sustainability, and national programmes for partners like Comic Relief and the National Lottery.

The network supports a broad spectrum of themes, including mental/physical health, equality/inclusion, poverty alleviation, youth/older people, community cohesion, environmental sustainability, education, disability, digital inclusion, arts/culture, and capacity building. Prioritising disadvantaged groups like vulnerable families, ethnic minorities, and those facing isolation or exclusion, it funds diverse activities such as grassroots services, capital projects, innovation, research, partnerships, and emergency relief—offering project, core/unrestricted (for charities), multi-year, and small quick-response grants tailored to local priorities.

Eligible applicants include UK-registered charities and community groups based in the UK, applying to their local foundation; preference goes to smaller organisations with incomes under £500,000–£1 million, though non-charities with charitable aims and governance qualify for project support. Typical grants range from £1,000–£25,000. The process starts with an Expression of Interest (EOI) or online registration, followed by full applications (governance docs, finances, proposals) reviewed in 8–12 weeks; most run quarterly/annual rounds or rolling basis—check local sites for deadlines.

Distinctive for blending national scale with hyper-local embedding, rigorous accreditation, and community-led governance, UKCF avoids large national charities unless thematic fits, emphasising measurable, inclusive impact over statutory bodies or non-local work.
