West Lancashire Freemasons' Charity

West Lancashire Freemasons' Charity (WLFC), rooted in 19th-century Masonic traditions and formally established in 2008 through a merger of seven Masonic charities, provides financial assistance to Freemasons and their dependants in the Province of West Lancashire, while directing over half its grants to broader community causes. Funded entirely by Freemason donations, WLFC embodies values of fraternity, compassion, service, and stewardship, blending traditional Masonic welfare with an outward-looking, inclusive philanthropy that strengthens civil society across Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and Cumbria.

It prioritises relief from hardship for Masonic beneficiaries and, for communities, projects enhancing education, quality of life, disability inclusion, children's services, health (including hospices, mental health, and medical research), and local voluntary action. Funding targets tangible outcomes like equipment, vehicles, facilities, capital items, and specific initiatives—evidenced by grants to Riding4All for inclusive sports, Beanstalk for literacy, Zoë’s Place for palliative care, and North West Blood Bikes for medical transport—favouring organisations delivering lasting impact for vulnerable groups such as children, disabled adults, and those with illness.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities and community groups operating strictly within the Province, with no income thresholds; unsolicited applications are welcomed. Typical grants range from £1,000 to £25,000 via rolling online forms, with major awards over £25,000 due by 30 June annually. Core costs, unrestricted funding, and revenue deficits are excluded. WLFC stands out for its volunteer-led governance, case-by-case assessments, expectation of Masonic acknowledgment and impact reporting, and dual focus on Masonic roots with progressive, high-impact community giving in North West England.
