William Syson Foundation

The William Syson Foundation, established in 2012 by lifelong Scottish arts patron William Syson, advances arts, heritage, and culture exclusively in Scotland by fostering artistic excellence, access, and talent development. Its mission supports registered arts charities promoting music, visual arts, theatre, literature, poetry, photography, film, digital arts, and cross-disciplinary work, nurturing emerging and established practitioners while enabling practice and enjoyment for Scottish communities, especially youth. With a philosophy of trust in local organizations, it emphasizes unrestricted funding, safeguarding compliance, and straightforward support without micromanagement, as seen in grants to Scottish Young Musicians, Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Arts Programme, chamber orchestras, festivals, and local collectives.

It funds revenue needs like core costs, projects, and general running expenses for small Scottish arts charities benefiting people in Scotland, prioritizing those demonstrating impact on talent, participation, and cultural vibrancy.

Eligible applicants are Scotland-registered charities with annual income under £500,000, operating at least 12 months, with audited/examined accounts and proven records; non-arts charities delivering arts projects are ineligible. Applications via email form during short open windows (next: noon 1–12 September 2025), with outcomes in 10 weeks; adhoc meetings.

Grants up to £5,000 (often maximum awarded) exclude capital costs, political/religious promotion, retrospective funding, or rapid re-applications.
