Belfast Charitable Society

Belfast Charitable Society, founded in 1752 by Belfast's leading citizens, established the city's first Poor House and Infirmary, pioneering social welfare, public health, and civic reform. Rooted in progressive philanthropy, its mission is to harness heritage assets like Clifton House and archives to tackle entrenched disadvantage, primarily in Belfast and Northern Ireland, championing fairness, dignity, historical awareness, and strategic partnerships. It prioritises the most vulnerable—older people and marginalised communities—through flexible grant-making, blended finance, loans, and collaborations, blending historic values with forward-facing impact via the Mary Ann McCracken Foundation for social justice, education, and women's rights.

The Society funds poverty alleviation, homelessness relief, support for older people, education and training (e.g., bursaries, Cost-of-Living Schools Support), heritage-led regeneration, social cohesion (e.g., Harmony Choir, North Belfast Youth Choir), employability, upskilling, and community integration. It backs community-led initiatives fostering self-reliance, pilot projects, capacity-building, and occasional core costs, with a focus on immediate needs like isolation, education inequality, and deprived neighbourhood regeneration.

Eligible entities include UK-registered charities, community groups, and social enterprises, favouring grassroots and small-to-medium organisations serving disadvantaged areas, without strict income thresholds. Geographically, it prioritises Belfast (especially North Belfast and Lisburn) and extends across Northern Ireland to acute disadvantage zones; no geographic base required.

Grants typically range from £1,000 to £20,000, with larger strategic investments possible.
