CHUF exclusively funds paediatric cardiac care initiatives, including advanced medical equipment, play therapy, clown doctors, psychological aftercare, family respite, staff training, entertainment on wards, and research. Grants support both one-off capital projects and ongoing revenue needs for NHS units, clinical teams, patient families, and linked voluntary groups, focusing on emotional, practical, and morale-boosting extras beyond statutory care. The fund operates across the North of England, with a particular focus on the North East, Northumberland, Cumbria, and Yorkshire networks.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities or NHS entities with direct ties to paediatric cardiac services in the North East, Northumberland, Cumbria, Yorkshire, or broader North of England networks. No income thresholds apply, but strong regional and clinical connections are essential. The fund prioritises organisations that work closely with the Children's Heart Unit at Freeman Hospital and other specialist cardiac units, and that support children, young people, and their families affected by heart conditions.

CHUF avoids generalist causes, unrestricted core costs, or projects outside heart conditions, youth, or its regional focus. It does not fund initiatives that lack a direct connection to paediatric cardiac care or that fall outside the North of England.

CHUF works by invitation and does not accept unsolicited applications. Initial exploratory contact leads to collaborative development of funding proposals. The fund supports both one-off capital projects and ongoing revenue needs, and decisions are made with clinical input, reflecting a partnership approach with NHS teams and families.
