Empower Community Foundation

The Foundation funds projects advancing sustainable development, local environmental improvement, climate action, energy education, skills-building, and community resilience in areas near renewable energy sites. Activities range from small-scale capital improvements to community spaces, after-school clubs, peer support groups, and therapeutic outdoor activities, to energy efficiency schemes, green infrastructure, and training for green-sector employment. Work is focused within the Sunderland local council area and localities neighbouring its affiliated solar parks.

Registered charities and community groups based in or serving the Sunderland local council area and areas surrounding the Foundation's solar parks are eligible. The Foundation prioritises grassroots organisations with lived experience addressing energy transition challenges, fuel poverty prevention, and inclusive resilience for vulnerable residents, underserved families, and those experiencing social isolation or energy transition impacts. There is no religious restriction.

The Foundation does not fund ongoing core costs, major capital works, statutory services, or initiatives that operate outside the localities neighbouring its solar parks. Activities such as large-scale building projects and work that falls under statutory obligations are also excluded.

The Foundation's distinctive model is directly tied to solar parks and community energy CICs, empowering localities hosting renewables with grassroots, person-centred sustainability. Unsolicited applications are welcomed.
