Essex Community Foundation

The Trust funds a broad range of work, including community development, support for children and young people, mental health and wellbeing, care for older people, arts and culture, environmental projects, and poverty reduction. They also support unpaid carers, community safety and crime prevention, rehabilitation, and heritage participation. Some programmes focus on specific themes such as creating local opportunities, strengthening community connections, and responding to local needs. They operate across the county of Essex, with some programmes specific to administrative Essex under the County Council (excluding Southend and Thurrock), and targeted funds for local areas such as North Weald.

Essex-based charities, community groups, social enterprises, and unincorporated associations can apply. Priority is strongly given to smaller organisations with modest annual incomes. Beneficiaries include unpaid carers, children and young people, older people, isolated individuals, people from ethnic minority communities, victims of crime or domestic abuse, and offenders. Groups must operate within administrative Essex under Essex County Council; organisations based in Thurrock or Southend are not eligible for some programmes. Faith groups can apply for activities that benefit the wider public.

They do not fund for-profit businesses, statutory organisations including schools or councils in the discharge of their obligations (though PTAs set up as a charity can apply), political campaigning, the promotion of religion or religious activities that do not benefit the wider public, organisations that give funds or award grants to third parties, large appeals, retrospective funding for activities that have already taken place, or salaries under the General Programme.

They offer flexible funding for core costs, project delivery, and equipment. Some awards are made for an initial three-year period, with the potential for review for a fourth year. They welcome unsolicited applications. Some programmes require match funding. They work collaboratively with local donors and businesses to direct resources where they are most needed.
