Apply an intersectional analysis throughout your application, demonstrating how gender disadvantage intersects with race, disability, poverty, immigration status, and other factors for the women and girls you serve. Funders in this space expect nuanced understanding rather than treating women as a homogeneous group. If your work addresses violence against women and girls, reference the VAWG framework and present your expertise in domestic abuse, sexual violence, or harmful practices with appropriate evidence and professional standards. Show that women hold leadership positions throughout your organisation — in delivery, management, and governance — and explain how this shapes your approach. Describe how you create safe spaces for participants, including physical safety, emotional safety, and confidentiality protections, particularly for women fleeing abuse or those with insecure immigration status. Use trauma-informed approaches as a foundation for service design and explain how staff are trained and supervised to work with trauma. Present gender-disaggregated data throughout your application to demonstrate the specific impact on women and girls, including baseline data and projected outcomes. Strong applications demonstrate both direct service provision and contribution to systemic change — challenging the structures that create gender inequality alongside supporting individual women to overcome its effects.
