MCS Foundation

The Foundation funds projects that fall within four key themes: heat pump system efficiency and flexibility; better use of data; supporting commissioning organisations to deliver low-carbon heating; and using comfort as a driver for retrofit demand. Projects outside these themes but aligned with the overall vision are also welcomed. Supported activities include project delivery, research, equipment, training, and salaries. The Foundation works UK-wide and also runs a separate apprenticeship scheme focused on building the workforce for low-carbon heating. All funded work must be made publicly available wherever possible.

The Foundation accepts applications from registered charities, social enterprises, community benefit societies, community interest companies, schools, and community groups. It supports projects benefiting the general public and young people entering the green skills sector. Applicants should demonstrate strong alignment with the Foundation’s mission to decarbonise UK homes. There is no restriction based on religious context. The Foundation welcomes unsolicited applications across its programmes.

The Foundation does not fund capital works, profit-making activities, or projects that keep outputs private. It also does not support high-risk organisations, as determined through due diligence. All project outputs must be shared publicly except where doing so would breach regulations.

The Foundation offers grants through two distinct programmes: a main grant call for environmental projects and a separate apprenticeship scheme. It supports unsolicited applications and funds project delivery, research, equipment, training, and salaries. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis for the apprenticeship scheme until all allocation is used. The Foundation requires that all funded outputs be made publicly available to ensure wider benefit.
