Miles Morland Foundation

The Foundation funds creative writing in English, both fiction and non-fiction, through scholarships that allow dedicated writing time, literary prizes, festivals, postgraduate scholarships, and capacity-building for literary charities. It also supports literary events and projects that blend literary development with social impact. Support is concentrated on Sub-Saharan Africa, though UK-based organisations that engage African talent are also considered. The Foundation favours deep, thematic engagements over broad or short-term projects, making its funding particularly suited to ambitious, long-form literary work.

Eligible applicants include individuals born in Africa or with both parents born there, who can demonstrate their African ties and provide a published work excerpt. Organisations such as UK-registered charities and academic institutions may apply, but organisational grants are by invitation only. The Foundation prioritises young and established African writers, UK-based literary organisations engaging African talent, and entities fostering arts and civil society. There are no income, entity type, or religious restrictions on eligibility.

The Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications for organisational grants. Its support is limited to literature and civil society initiatives with a focus on Africa and the developing world; projects outside these themes are not considered.
