National Zakat Foundation (NZF)

The National Zakat Foundation (NZF), established in 2011, is the UK's largest distributor of Zakat, dedicated to enabling Muslims to fulfill their religious obligation by providing direct financial assistance to those in hardship, primarily within British Muslim communities. Guided by Islamic principles of justice, compassion, solidarity, dignity, and empowerment, NZF circulates wealth locally to combat poverty, social exclusion, and lack of opportunity, emphasizing long-term transformation over short-term aid. NZF funds three core programmes: the Hardship Relief Fund for cash grants covering essentials like food and clothing; the Housing Fund for rent arrears, council tax debts, moving costs, and furniture; and the Empowerment Programme for skills training, education, and employability to break poverty cycles. Priority beneficiaries are UK Muslims over 18 facing verified financial hardship, including NEETs, refugees/asylum seekers with legal status, women with employment barriers, resource-poor graduates, and families at risk of homelessness—served nationwide across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Unsolicited applications are accepted rolling via an online portal from eligible individuals only (Muslim, UK legal residents); organisations receive invite-only partnership grants for empowerment projects. Typical one-off grants range £280–£2,780 based on family size and need, with decisions in 4 weeks after 2–4 week shortlisting; one successful application per person/year. NZF excludes core/unrestricted organisational funding, routine charity support, and non-Zakat-eligible applicants, standing out for its swift, automated process, empowerment focus, and strict criteria promoting self-sufficiency and community strength.
