Nationwide Foundation

The Foundation funds three key programme areas: nurturing innovative research and pilots for housing reform; empowering community-led housing models such as land trusts, co-operatives, and self-build projects; and transforming the private rented sector through tenant protections, affordability initiatives, and market fixes. It supports low-income households, vulnerable renters, and marginalised communities across the UK. Work includes advocacy, capacity-building, policy development, and scalable pilots that can influence the wider housing system. The Foundation favours organisations with deep housing expertise and strong community ties.

Eligible applicants are UK registered charities and community groups based anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. The Foundation prioritises organisations that demonstrate deep housing expertise, strong community connections, and a commitment to systemic change. There are no income thresholds, but a preference is given to those showing sector leadership. The Foundation works with groups that serve low-income households, vulnerable renters, and marginalised communities.

The Foundation does not fund standard service delivery, capital appeals unrelated to housing, or projects outside its housing focus. It also excludes short-term initiatives that do not contribute to lasting systemic change. Non-housing causes and temporary relief projects are not supported.

Funding is by invitation only; the Foundation proactively identifies and approaches aligned partners. It supports both one-off and multi-year grants, prioritising long-term partnerships that drive systemic change. The Foundation favours collaborative, evidence-led approaches and works closely with grantees to achieve lasting impact.
