Solberga Foundation

The Solberga Foundation is an independent UK family foundation established in 2019 by the Johansson family, with Kristina Johansson as founder, chair, and managing director. Registered as a charity, it promotes compassion and peaceful coexistence among humans, animals, and nature, envisioning a sustainable, equitable future free from negative human environmental impacts. Rooted in systems thinking, future generations advocacy, and trust-based philanthropy, it prioritizes transformative social movements addressing root causes of injustice through long-term, equitable partnerships that empower grassroots voices via informal dialogue, eschewing rigid donor goals.

It funds climate justice, gender equality, and animal welfare, especially at their intersections, supporting grassroots organizations, activist groups, and individuals—particularly those led by or representing communities of colour, low-income, and Indigenous peoples most affected by the climate crisis. Grants cover project funding, core costs, advocacy, movement-building, and capacity-building, with examples including re-granters like Thousand Currents for Global South initiatives, War on Want, and Friends of the Earth Scotland for UK-based efforts.

Eligible entities include small to medium-sized charities and groups with no formal income thresholds, prioritizing grassroots and underrepresented voices; geographic focus is primarily England but extends to UK and global initiatives. It does not accept unsolicited applications—grants are proactively identified by its four family trustees on a rolling basis, with typical awards of £5,000–£50,000 for one year following internal due diligence and informal conversations. Distinctive for its solidarity-driven, low-burden approach, non-staffed pro bono operations, and emphasis on building power from below, Solberga avoids statutory bodies or misaligned activities, centering systemic change through relationship-centred support.
