Trust for Research and Education on the Arms Trade (Treat)

Treat funds research projects dissecting arms transfer policies, UK arms exports compliance with international humanitarian law, arms industry influence on government and defence policy, effectiveness of arms control treaties and disarmament initiatives, and humanitarian and developmental consequences of armed conflict. Supported activities include publication of reports, academic books, and investigative analyses; workshops, seminars, and conferences on security policy and peace studies; postgraduate research fellowships; and public briefings and educational resources for policy analysts, investigative journalists, and campaigners. It operates across the UK with an international remit.

Treat funds registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, community interest companies, and social enterprises. Beneficiaries encompass academic researchers, university departments in international relations and security studies, specialist think-tanks on disarmament, and postgraduate students. It prioritises UK-based academics and non-profits with international remits addressing conflict-affected regions through rigorous, accessible peace and security education. Unsolicited applications are accepted.

Treat does not support advocacy, campaigning, or lobbying activities, nor does it fund core organisational costs or capital projects such as building purchases or renovations. The trust restricts its funding to evidence-based research and educational outputs that are freely available for public debate, meaning any work that is primarily partisan, commercial, or lacking academic rigour falls outside its scope. It also excludes activities that do not directly contribute to impartial analysis or dissemination of knowledge about the arms trade.

Treat funds specific research and educational projects rather than general ongoing costs. It welcomes unsolicited approaches and supports initiatives that produce freely available outputs for debate. It does not fund core costs or capital projects, focusing solely on evidence-based work.
