Ulster Defence Regiment Benevolent Fund

The fund supports causes including poverty, mental health, and disability, addressing hardship linked to Troubles-era service. It covers urgent relief, essential living expenses, medical interventions, home adaptations, respite care, specialist equipment, and wellbeing activities such as reconciliation events. Support targets individuals resident in Northern Ireland experiencing crises like debt, homelessness risk, disability, bereavement, or the psychological legacy of conflict. The fund also partners with the Veterans Welfare Service NI to reach eligible beneficiaries.

Eligibility is strictly for former Ulster Defence Regiment personnel of all ranks, and their dependants (widows, widowers, children), with some extension to equivalent Royal Irish Regiment Home Service members. Beneficiaries must be resident in Northern Ireland and facing hardship from sickness, disability, poverty, trauma, or adversity. There are no income thresholds, and applicants are assessed on individual need rather than organisational criteria. Charities or non-residents are not eligible.

The fund does not support organisations, charities, or formal groups. It excludes capital projects, building works, and general community causes. Non-residents of Northern Ireland and individuals without a direct link to the Ulster Defence Regiment or approved Royal Irish Regiment equivalents are also ineligible. The focus remains exclusively on personal, immediate relief for its regimental community.

The fund provides needs-led grants for immediate relief, covering essential living costs and specific interventions. It does not accept unsolicited applications; grants are made by invitation or referral, often in partnership with the Veterans Welfare Service NI. Support is confidential and non-discriminatory, tailored to individual circumstances.
