Active Essex Foundation

The Foundation's cause areas centre on using sport and physical activity to reduce health and social inequalities. Its Sport and Youth Crime Prevention programme specifically targets reducing youth crime through sport interventions, funding project delivery, equipment, and training for frontline organisations. Other supported work includes confidence-building initiatives for girls, holistic wellbeing activities, and community asset upgrades such as improvements to halls and clubs. The Foundation also funds capacity-building for small-to-medium grassroots groups. All funded work must take place exclusively in Essex, with organisations based in Essex, Southend, or Thurrock. Beneficiaries include ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, women and girls, and people from low socio-economic groups in high-deprivation areas, with a strong emphasis on young people at risk of crime, exploitation, or poor mental wellbeing.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities, community groups, social enterprises, and community interest companies operating exclusively in Essex, Southend, or Thurrock. The Foundation prioritises small-to-medium grassroots entities and does not apply strict income limits, though applicants must demonstrate a proven track record serving target populations. Beneficiary groups include ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, women and girls, and people from low socio-economic backgrounds in high-deprivation areas. There are no religious restrictions on applicants.

The Foundation does not fund religious activities. It also avoids generalist funding, instead emphasising sustainable partnerships, peer networks, and system convening over short-term, standalone grants. Work that falls outside the geographic boundaries of Essex, Southend, or Thurrock is not supported, nor are activities that do not align with the sport-for-development or physical activity focus.

The Foundation funds project delivery, equipment, and training through its programmes. It uses an asset-based community development approach, prioritising sustainable partnerships and system convening over short-term aid. Unsolicited applications are welcome, though the Foundation emphasises collaboration and peer networks rather than transactional grant-making.
