Devon Community Foundation

Devon Community Foundation, established in 1996 as Devon’s largest independent grantmaker and a registered charity, harnesses local philanthropy to strengthen communities, tackle entrenched inequalities, and promote inclusion, opportunity, wellbeing, and environmental sustainability across the county. Rooted in place-based, community-led giving, it inspires individuals, families, businesses, and funders to drive transformative change, blending donor intent with evidence of unmet needs through direct grants, convening, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy. Its distinctive approach emphasizes relationship-based support for grassroots groups, transparent governance, and deep local knowledge, prioritizing marginalised, low-income, and excluded communities in rural, coastal, and urban Devon.

It funds a broad spectrum of initiatives addressing economic and health inequalities, educational and employment opportunities, support for the most disadvantaged, safer cohesive communities, and net-zero climate resilience. Supported activities include mental health for youth, creative workshops for disabled adults, rural transport to combat isolation, foodbanks, older people’s wellbeing, women’s safety projects, and community infrastructure, offering project funding, core/unrestricted costs (for charities), revenue for services, capacity building, and capital (up to £70,000 for select funds).

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities, CICs, community groups, and occasionally academic institutions or schools delivering wider community benefits (not statutory), with a preference for small grassroots organisations under £500,000 income; work must be strictly within Devon. Small grants (£100–£5,000, capital capped at £1,500) accept direct online applications (rolling, decisions in 10 weeks); larger grants require database registration via the ‘Getting to Know You’ form, followed by invitations. Themed funds have specific deadlines (e.g., quarterly for Batsworthy Cross).

Exclusions cover statutory duplication, party political activities, and non-Devon work; DCF stands out for its accessibility (audio forms, Q&As), focus on smallest groups, and flexible blending of generalist and targeted funds.
